In 2018, Subaru unveils one of their best cars to celebrate a strong performance achievement, this was the Subaru WRX STI Type RA.

What does “Type RA” Stand for?

The RA designation, short for “Record Attempt,” has adorned various Subaru performance models over the years. It first gained prominence in 1989 when a specially outfitted Subaru Legacy shattered the FIA World Speed Endurance Record, covering over 62,000 miles in just 18 days and hitting a top speed of 138 mph. Carrying on this legacy of pushing boundaries, a special edition WRX STI Type RA NBR Special took a similar challenge the Nürburgring speed record the summer of 2018.

The Record Attempt: Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR at Nurburgring

In the early 90s, Subaru won their first rally champion with the 555 from Colin McRae. In today’s world, the Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special was made with a goal to be the fastest Sedan and they did it on July 21, 2017.  The driver behind the wheel of the Type RA NBR in Nurburgring was Richie Stanaway, a professional race car.

The STI Type RA NBR was using a 600 horsepower EJ25 for the attempt to break the record as the faster  sedan.  The EJ engine was designed to have a wide torque range so it’s flexible to drive. The car was fitted with a 4 way adjustable for a high compression and low speed rebound.

Their first attempt there was consistent rain, but it gave them the ability to practice and get the feeling of the car. They made a second attempt in dry condition. The new official sedan lap record was an amazing 6:57 .578.

This was below 7 minutes on the first try which allowed them to meet their goal. The Type RA was later introduced to the US.

Let’s talk about what made the WRX STI Type RA special.

Subaru WRX STI Type RA: What about it?

There were only 500 Type RA’s made for release to the USA in 2018. Staying true to this tradition, the 2018 WRX STI Type RA offers heightened performance through a blend of weight reduction, suspension enhancements, and engine upgrades.

This new, numbered limited edition model boasts a carbon fiber roof panel, ditching the spare tire, a carbon fiber pedestal wing, and lightweight BBS® 19-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in 245/35R19 Yokohama Advan Sports tires as standard features.

Under the hood, a 2.5-liter turbocharged BOXER engine roars to life, pumping out an estimated 310 horsepower thanks to an STI-tuned cold air intake and high-flow performance exhaust. A retuned ECU and reinforced pistons further contribute to the power boost.

The six-speed transmission sports a revised 3rd gear ratio paired with a short throw shifter, resulting in quicker acceleration.

Handling gets a significant upgrade with inverted front struts and rear double wishbone suspension, all equipped with Bilstein® dampers. A modified multi-mode VDC system enhances stability control, keeping the car firmly planted on its intended path.

Meanwhile, the Brembo® brake system, featuring monoblock 6-piston front calipers and dual-piston rear calipers with a sleek silver finish, ensures superior stopping power, aided by cross-drilled rotors for improved heat dissipation.

Visually, the WRX STI Type RA stands out with exclusive Cherry Blossom Red accents adorning the front mesh grille and new rear bumper cover. An added STI front underspoiler aids stability at high speeds, while black-finished exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, a roof-mounted shark fin antenna, and STI fender badges complete the striking exterior. The rear deck lid proudly displays the WRX STI Type RA badge.

Inside the cabin, Recaro® performance design front seats with red bolsters and stitching, along with an embossed STI logo on the head restraints, provide both comfort and sporty flair. Signature red stitching and accent trim adorn the interior, while the Ultrasuede® wrapped steering wheel ensures a firm grip, featuring a black gloss-finish center spoke insert with the STI logo.

Keyless Access with push-button start adds convenience to the package. Each of the 500 WRX STI Type RA units produced for retail sale comes with its own individual numbering, commemorated with a plaque mounted on the center console.

Key differences between the Type RA and regular STI.

The Subaru WRX STI Type RA distinguishes itself from the regular STI model through several key differences:

1. Performance Enhancements:
   • The Type RA typically boasts increased performance figures compared to the standard STI. This includes higher horsepower output, achieved through modifications such as an STI-tuned cold air intake, high-flow performance exhaust, retuned ECU, and reinforced pistons.

   • The Type RA often features weight-saving measures to improve agility and performance. This may include the use of lightweight materials like carbon fiber for components such as the carbon fiber roof panel and pedestal wing, as well as the removal of non-essential items like the spare tire.
3. Limited Edition Features:
   • The Type RA is usually released as a numbered limited edition model, adding exclusivity and collectability to its appeal. Each unit is individually numbered with a plaque mounted on the center console, signaling its special status among enthusiasts.
4. Styling and Aerodynamics:
   • Exterior styling enhancements, such as exclusive accent colors and a unique front underspoiler, differentiate the Type RA from the regular STI model.
   • Aerodynamic improvements, like the addition of a pedestal wing and other aerodynamic tweaks, may be present to enhance downforce and stability, especially at high speeds. You can forget the iconic Type RA wing that writes out STI on the side is new.  It is much different than the standard painted STI wing.
5. Wheels:
   • The BBS rims are what stand out to me. The iconic gold rims are striking and the design is flawless. It uses the same wheel size as the 2018+ STI at 19 inch x 8.5 inch, however, not only are they made in collaboration with  BBS, they are forged for extra durability.
6. Interior Upgrades:
   • The Type RA often features interior enhancements to complement its performance-oriented nature. This may include specialized seating options, unique stitching, and branded elements like STI logos or badges.
