This Steering Wheel Wrap Transformation will complete my DC5 Type R Interior Conversion. Since acquiring my 2003 Acura RSX Type S, I’ve been on a journey of enhancements and modifications to elevate its performance and aesthetics. From fine-tuning the suspension and brakes to refreshing the interior, my latest endeavor focuses on revitalizing the steering wheel – a crucial element in both function and style.
The years haven’t been gentle on the original steering wheel, with the leather showing signs of wear and tear. To address this, I’ve chosen a restoration route rather than a replacement, opting for a DIY approach to breathe new life into it.
Steering wheel wrap upgrade
While the allure of a Japanese Type R DC5 MOMO steering wheel is undeniable, I’m exploring a more budget-friendly alternative. Enter the Steering wheel wrap: “MEWANT Hand Sewing Black Genuine Leather Steering Wheel Cover Wrap,” a fitting solution found on Amazon. Crafted from top-grain leather, it promises durability, breathability, and a soft touch – essential qualities for a comfortable driving experience.
The installation process of the steering wheel wrap, though requiring patience and precision, offers a rewarding outcome. Detailed instructions and accompanying tools facilitate a seamless application, ensuring a snug fit that mimics the OEM standard. With options for customization, including leather and thread colors, personalizing the cover to suit individual preferences is made easy. I opted for the red thread to emulate the honda red stitching style and paid an extra $30 bucks for genuine leather than the artificial leather.
Feedback from fellow enthusiasts underscores the Steering wheel wrap cover’s effectiveness, acknowledging its time-consuming nature but ultimately affirming its value. While minor adjustments may be necessary for optimal alignment, the overall result is a rejuvenated steering wheel that enhances both grip and aesthetics. They were right on how much time this take you. Be sure to dedicate 4-5 hours if you want it to be perfect.
For those intrigued by the DIY process, I’ve documented each step in a series of informative videos on my YouTube Channel, @RevCircle specifically around removal techniques to installation of the cover, my goal is to show a detail tutorial for others to easily follow.
Removing the existing steering wheel is the initial step in this transformation journey. Armed with essential tools and precautions, the process ensures the safe disassembly of the airbag unit and securing of the steering wheel. By following detailed instructions, you can navigate the removal process efficiently, laying the groundwork for subsequent upgrades.
With the steering wheel successfully removed, I placed the cover around the old wheel and used the double sided tape that prevents the cover from slipping. Although I doubt it would do this, I did it anyways since my goals is to drive more aggressively in the DC5.
The next step after the cover gets snuggly placed around the old rsx steering wheel is to sew the threads making sure everything is aligned and sewn up. Here’s a photo of the finally product of my old wheel being transformed by the steering wheel wrap; while outside of the car and when it was put back in the car.
You can take a look at this video on how to put it on too.
Closing thoughts
This journey of transforming my 2003 Acura RSX Type S extends beyond mere upgrades – it’s a testament to the passion and dedication of making this a great car again and with a JDM DC5 integra lens. Through meticulous attention to detail and a willingness to explore alternatives, each modification brings us closer my realization of if Honda brought the DC5 to the United States in a different style than the leather Acura RSX Type S.
What do you think? Did it turn out okay?
