The Subaru Impreza 555: Rallying Icon

The Subaru Impreza 555, an enduring symbol in the world of rally racing, has left an indelible mark on motorsports enthusiasts worldwide. If you were to ask fans to name a car synonymous with rallying, the Subaru Impreza would undoubtedly be among the top answers, if not the outright favorite. Even the rich history of the STI, the Impreza 555 is what cemented it’s greatness and fame. While other legendary cars of rallying history have found their place in museums, the Impreza maintains a strong presence in international rally competitions.

The Subaru Impreza 555 Debut (1993)

In 1993, the Subaru team made a significant debut in the WRC with the Impreza 555, featuring a distinctive blue and yellow color scheme, sponsored by State Express 555. This iconic livery, combined with the 555 moniker, has become synonymous with the first generation of the racing model. The road version, especially the WRX STI, gained popularity with its impressive modifications, including a highly-tuned turbocharged engine producing 250 bhp.

Subaru Challenges and Evolution (1995)

As the Impreza 555 made its mark, the racing version faced new challenges in 1995 with FIA regulations restricting air intakes. Responding to this, Subaru introduced a new boxer engine with revised camshafts and a different compression ratio, meeting the demand for around 300 bhp from the 2-liter engines used by major teams. The active four-wheel-drive system, featuring an electronically-controlled front differential, further enhanced the car’s performance.

Pinnacle of Success (1995 Season)

The 1995 season proved to be a pinnacle for the Impreza 555, securing both the manufacturers’ title for Subaru World Rally Team and the drivers’ title for Colin McRae. The season’s success, coupled with high demand for homologation specials, led to the introduction of the STI Version II range. Subaru also released the limited 555 edition, mirroring the success of the racing Imprezas and quickly becoming one of the most sought-after road-legal sports cars globally.

L555 BAT, a renowned Impreza 555 driven by three World Rally champions, played a significant role in McRae’s 1995 title. Its success began with Ari Vatanen’s debut at Rally Finland. McRae faced challenges in 1994 but bounced back with victories, solidifying L555 BAT’s place in rallying history.

Commemorating Achievements (1997)

In 1997, acknowledging the achievements of the previous year, Subaru introduced the WRX V-Limited, available in two versions, commemorating the double world title. As the FIA replaced Group A cars with the new World Rally Cars, the original Impreza 555 retired after four successful seasons, giving way to the redesigned Impreza WRC 97. Subaru continued competing in WRC with various evolutions of the Impreza until 2008.
